La Traviata Sunset Opera
Giuseppe Verdi’s most popular opera, La Traviata comes to SKYCITY Darwin for one night of romance, passion and tragedy.
Under the direction of acclaimed performed and director, Hugh Halliday, eight impressive and captivating singers will have audiences spellbound performing key arias including: Libiamo, Un di, felice, eterea, Sempre Libera, De’miei bollenti spiriti, Di provenza il mar and Parigi o cara.
La Traviata tells the tale of Violetta, a fallen woman who finally finds love in Alfredo. For Violetta love has been bought and sold, but now it is a gift of the heart. Only too soon however she is requested to refrain from seeing her true love by Alfredo’s father. Torn and broken, she turns her back on true love and succumbs to tuberculosis with Alfredo left to carry her memory, alone.
La Traviata is based on the novel by Alexandre Dumas Fils entitled, La Dame aux Camelias (1848) that tells of his real life lover, Marie Duplessis. La Traviata literally means The Woman Who Strayed or The Fallen One.
Experienced director, Hugh Halliday, brings this production to life. Hugh Halliday’s career has spanned nearly five decades and has included opera, music theatre, cabaret, special events and gala spectaculars. Hugh has directed for Melbourne Opera Company, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, English National Opera, Stonnington Opera in the Park and the Melbourne Comedy Festival.
Katia Pronin plays Violetta. Katia has been trained in piano and voice in St Petersburg, Italy and Germany. Her professional experience has seen her perform in Poland, Russia, the United States and across Australia.
Gaetano Bonfante plays Alfredo. Gaetano has performed both nationally and internationally with critics in Australia and overseas calling him the next Andrea Bocelli. As a tenor soloist he recently sang with the Victorian Opera and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in the concert version of Der Fliegende Holländer (The Flying Dutchman).
Manfred Pohlenz plays Father Gemont. Manfred has graduated in Music Education from the University of Adelaide. Presently he is the Director of Music at Brauer College and Resident Conductor of the Warrnambool Symphony Orchestra. He has played Alfio in Cavelleria Rusticana, Zuniga in Carmen, Sciarrone in Tosca, Papageno in The Magic Flute, Leporello in Don Giovanni and Gemont in La Traviata for Melbourne Opera.
