NEWSFLASH: SKYCITY Auckland switches off the Sky Tower10 June 2008 In response to current nationwide electricity supply concerns, SKYCITY Auckland is switching off the Sky Tower. The Tower lighting, which was recently cut back, is now being turned off altogether until further notice. The flashing red aviation lights are required to remain on. SKYCITY is also minimising façade flood lighting across its complex. Simon Jamieson, General Manager SKYCITY Auckland Hotels Group, said: "Like every New Zealander, we are concerned about the country's electricity supply, and we believe it is our responsibility to make this move to assist with the power saving request." The 328m Sky Tower has been an Auckland icon for more than a decade and is often themed to mark significant community events. The business will continue to monitor the situation in conjunction with its power supplier.
