Craps

What is the objective of the game?

The basic idea of Craps is to wager with or against the dice making a specific number when rolled by the shooter (the person rolling the dice).

How do I place a wager on the Craps table?

Just like all other table games, wagers on the Craps table are made with chips which may be purchased at any table. The table is laid with a number of wagers, some of the most common of which are described below.

Who rolls the dice?

Every player has an opportunity to roll or shoot the dice. The person rolling the dice is called the shooter. At the end of each shoot, the dice are passed to the player on the left of the most recent shooter. All players may accept or decline their turn as shooter. To become the shooter you must first have a wager on either the PASS LINE or the DON'T PASS LINE.

Craps Terminology

  • Naturals: 7 or 11
  • Craps: 2, 3 or 12
  • Points: 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10
  • Puck: Used to mark the Point. When the Puck is in the OFF position this signals the start of a new game. If the Puck is in the ON position, the number that it is on becomes the point.
  • Come Out Roll: This is the first roll of a new game, when the Puck is in the OFF position.
  • 7 Out: A 7 Out occurs when the shooter rolls a 7 before rolling the point. After a 7 Out, the person on the left receives the dice and an opportunity to become the next shooter.

Types of Wagers

Pass Line

A wager on the Pass Line wins if the shooter throws a Natural (7 or 11) on the Come Out Roll. It loses if a Crap Number (2, 3 or 12) is thrown on the Come Out Roll. If a Point number (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10) is the first number thrown, that number must be re-rolled again before a 7.

An easy way to remember this is if the Puck is OFF, the Pass Line wins on a 7. If the Puck is ON, the Pass Line loses on a 7.

Don't Pass Line

This is the opposite of a Pass Line. You win if the shooter throws a 2 or 3 on the Come Out Roll, and lose if a 7 or 11 is thrown.

If a 12 is thrown, this is known as a Stand Off, and neither wins nor loses. If a point is thrown on the Come Out Roll a 7 must be thrown before that point to win.

Place Bets

Place Bets (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10) are another way of covering different numbers during a roll. A Place Bet wins if that number is thrown before a 7 is thrown. For example a Place Bet on 5 wins if the 5 is thrown before a 7. You can cover more than just one Place Bet if you wish.

Field

Field is a one roll wager that wins or loses on that roll. A wager in the Field wins if a 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11 or 12 is thrown. It loses if any other number is thrown. If 2 or 12 is thrown the Field pays double.

Big 6 & 8

These bets win if a 6 or an 8 is thrown before a 7. They can be placed at any time. Both the 6 and 8 are separate bets.

Hard Ways

For these wagers to win, the shooter must roll an exact combination. For example a Hard 6 wins only if a 3 and 3 are thrown. These lose on a 7 and an easy combination. A Hard 6 loses on a 4 and 2, and a 5 and 1.

Eleven

A wager that wins if an Eleven is thrown. It loses on any other number thrown.

Any Seven

A one-roll wager that wins if a Seven is thrown on the next throw. If any other number is thrown, it loses.

Any Craps

A one-roll wager that wins if any Crap number 2, 3 or 12, is thrown on the next throw.

Specific Crap

Players wager on a Crap number 2, 3 or 12. These are one-roll wagers that win if that number is thrown on the next roll.

Horn

A one-roll wager that covers the numbers 2, 3, 11 and 12. If any of these numbers are thrown, it wins.
