SKYCITY ADELAIDE HOLD'EM CHAMPIONSHIPS

19 YEAR OLD LOCAL WINNER TAKES OUT LARGEST POKER TOURNAMENT IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA’S HISTORY!

19-year-old South Australian Daniel Booth has just the inaugural SKYCITY Adelaide Holdem Championship Series - the largest poker tournament in South Australia’s history, featuring a total prize pool of over $340,000.

The young Adelaide University student who works part time at Foodland, beat world poker champion, Joe Hachem and over 120 other local, interstate and international poker players to take out the main prize.

Australian poker legend Joe Hachem (who was knocked out of the tournament on day one) presented the winner with the trophy and the $96,365 first place cash prize.

Joe Hachem says it’s great that poker continues to grow in popularity world over.

“It’s fantastic that such a young man who is playing his first live poker tournament for cash triumphs. It was a great effort and I hope he goes on to great things with his poker,” says Hachem.

Daniel Booth, who was one of four people to earn a free seat in the tournament after winning weekly poker tournaments at hotels around Adelaide (through the NPL poker tournament), says he can’t believe it.

“I never dreamed I would win this tournament especially since I was up against so many of the worlds best.

“I’ve only recently started playing poker and taking it seriously since NPL poker started in Adelaide pubs and hotels in June of this year.”

Daniel’s parents and friends were under strict instructions not to watch him playing as it might “put me off my game.”

Daniel is looking forward to returning to work at Foodland tomorrow where he stocks shelves because he says it’s “double pay day” and he doesn't get many of those.

The SKYCITY Adelaide Holdem Championship Series began in June 2007 with the two-day finals occurring on November 16 and 17.

SKYCITY Adelaide Communications Manager, Vanessa Regan, says it’s great that tournaments like this give everyday people the chance to enter and win an event that is generally off limits to amateur players.

“This is an incredible day for Daniel Booth and for poker in South Australia. He has done so well against some of the world’s best poker players and we’re thrilled that a local winner took out both the major prize and second place too.”
