SKYCITY Auckland

Starship Foundation

SKYCITY's support for child health initiatives in the Auckland region includes our five-star sponsorship of Starship Children's Health.

One of SKYCITY's first projects with the Starship Foundation was Puawaitahi, the first multi-agency centre for abused children in New Zealand.

SKYCITY Auckland and the Starship Foundation worked closely to make Puawaitahi a reality, including fundraising campaigns, planning and project co-ordination.

A donation of $100,000 was made to the Puawaitahi project, in addition to developing and financing two 'Safe & Sound' appeals - in 2001 and 2002, to generate the final funds needed to ensure the centre opened.

In 2004, the SKYCITY Auckland Community Trust granted $100,000 towards the refurbishment of the Starship Atrium. The Atrium, affectionately known as the 'heart' of the hospital was transformed from a tired well-used space into a New Zealand rainforest.

Recently, SKYCITY has been actively involved in the fight against Diabetes Type 2 through the Starship Children and Young People's Diabetes Prevention and Management Programme. Diabetes Type 2 is an increasing problem in New Zealand. Each year the number of people with the disease increases by 25%.

This year the SKYCITY Auckland Community Trust has chosen to continue to support the fight against Diabetes by granting $150,000 to establish a new Diabetes School Education and Management Programme. This programme will introduce Diabetes health educators into schools with the ultimate aim to equip teachers, parents and students to identify and manage obesity and Diabetes at school.

The Family Fun Appeal

In June 2003 SKYCITY and the Starship Foundation launched the 'Family Fun Appeal' to further assist children and families, many of whom arrive at the centre in emotional and physical crisis.

Proceeds from the appeal were used to fund much-needed support for family services such as educational material, clothing, transport, toys and food vouchers.
