McCahon House
The home of New Zealand artist Colin McCahon between 1953 and 1960.
The SKYCITY Auckland Community Trust has made a $214,790 foundation grant to fund the restoration of the original home of Colin McCahon, commonly regarded as New Zealand’s greatest painter.
McCahon (1919-1987) lived at the cottage at French Bay, Titirangi, Auckland from 1953-1960, a significant period of his career. Its preservation will enable visitors to learn more about the artist and experience first hand his working conditions and inspirations.
Along with the restoration, an artist’s studio and two bedroom accommodation facility will be built next to the old family house where selected national and international artists will live and work within the environment that influenced Colin McCahon, with up to three residencies offered annually.
The restoration project is expected to be completed in 2004.

Memorial Museum
Architect’s sketch of the Atrium at the redeveloped Museum.
The SKYCITY Auckland Community Trust is playing a role in the $60 million redevelopment of the historic Auckland War Memorial Museum, contributing $450,000 over two years to assist with the project, which will mean an 60% increase in the museum’s size.
The key aspect of the Museum redevelopment will be transforming what is currently an internal courtyard area into six new levels, featuring an internal standard gallery space, an education centre, a 150-seat auditorium, a restaurant, a large events centre, basement storage for collections, truck access, a second public entrance at the rear of the Museum, and underground parking.
