Convention Centre Mural
"Hamish [Keith] had sold the idea of the theme of Pacific Flora - to give some sort of continuity to the three murals involved. The biggest challenge was in how to deal with a space so large. So I came up with the 'Industrial Solution': Silkscreening the whole thing!
"The factory I make my silkscreen prints at had just installed a 2 metre by 1 metre flatbed printer so we decided to work with that. The trick was to produce a design that could be broken down in repeatable units - repeatable in a way that could take charge of the huge walls without ever appearing in the same order or arrangement twice.
"It was quite a puzzle and a real headache for the printer as every panel had to go through the press five times - for the different colours - and be kept in order so the assembler could make sense of the 180 panels (per mural) when he came to fix them to the wall!
"Personally I think the final effect is stunning and a real tribute to everyone involved."
