Dick Frizzell
BORN: AUCKLAND IN 1943. GRADUATED FROM THE ILAM SCHOOL OF FINE ART AT CANTERBURY UNIVERSITY IN 1964.
Te-Ika-A-Maui
The work emphasises the metaphysical aspect of Maui’s powers. The figure of Maui is over-powering in its scale and design to engender a sense of awe and mystery.
The forms of the fish and hawk are derived from Maori rock drawings and the echoing rhythms of billowing water and smoke were inspired by similar conventions in Asian art.
The art deco murals in the Rockefeller Centre in New York were inspirational for the overall colouring and general look of the work.
