Mahi Whakairo
This work is an embodiment of Maori history and belief, and is also part of a storyline or thematical sequence developed for this venue.
The canoe (waka) is carved from kauri and the inset eyes of the god figures are paua. The height of the carving is just over 17 metres and it contains 15 cubic metres of kauri.
The waka represents the earth mother, sky father and Tane the God of the Forests.
