SKYCITY Hamilton

Smokefree F.A.Q.

Amendments to the Smokefree Environments Amendment Act 2003 come into force on 10 December 2004. Under this Act, people are no longer allowed to smoke in enclosed spaces in New Zealand hospitality venues. All enclosed spaces - including bars, clubs and restaurants - are now smokefree. There are no exceptions.

Is it just SKYCITY that we can no longer smoke at?

No, it is now against the law to smoke in all enclosed spaces in hospitality venues throughout New Zealand. So this change is affecting a large number of venues throughout the country, not just SKYCITY.

Where am I not allowed to smoke at SKYCITY?

You can no longer smoke inside SKYCITY or the Riverside Entertainment Centre. This also includes the carpark. You can smoke on the balconies located off Number Eight Bar and the main gaming floor. There is also a smoking area outside the front of Zone Sports Bar on Victoria Street.

Will smoking customers still be welcome at SKYCITY?

Absolutely! We want everyone to visit SKYCITY and have a great time - whether they smoke or not. Smokers are still very welcome but will just need to smoke on one of our designated smoking areas.

We have done our best to make the smoking areas as convenient and comfortable as possible for our smoking customers.

Where can I smoke at SKYCITY?

You’re welcome to smoke on one of our smoking friendly balconies.

What if the weather's bad - do people still have to go outside to smoke?

Unfortunately there is no alternative if customers wish to smoke.

Depending on weather conditions, customers who smoke should be able to find a deck which is relatively sheltered to take a smoking break.

Is it okay for me to smoke a cigar?

No. People are no longer allowed to smoke any tobacco products indoors at a hospitality venue, including cigars and pipes.

Do you still sell cigarettes from vending machines?

From 10 December 2004 we won’t be. However you will be able to buy cigarettes over the counter at Number Eight Bar during operation hours.

Remember, after 10 December 2004 it will not be illegal to smoke, it will only be illegal to smoke in enclosed spaces at hospitality venues.

What about VIPs and members. Do the same rules apply to them?

Yes. There are absolutely no exemptions to the regulations.
