Rigging Specialist

Job Profile

SKYCITY'S team of riggers are responsible for all work that needs to be done at height, both internal and external.

They are responsible for a wide range of jobs including window cleaning, cleaning the inside of the lift shafts, special projects, such as erecting the America's Cup signage on the side of the Sky Tower, erecting Sky Jump, and managing contractors who do work on the Sky Tower, such as changing light bulbs or working on the mast.

They also oversee any TV shoots that may take place at the Sky Tower, for example, shooting of "The Zone". The riggers job contains elements of construction, as well as overseeing and designing promotional events and the daily cleaning and maintenance that takes place on and inside the Sky Tower.

How long have you been in the job?

I started with SKYCITY in December 2005 I have been involved in many aspects of working at height for close to 15yrs specialising in height access projects for the past 6yrs.

What do you like most about your job?

I enjoy dealing with the challenges that come up each day, I like to see a job well done and to the satisfaction of our customers (internal & external). There is a lot of variation in terms of what each day brings.

What are some of the problems or difficulties you face in your job?

We are daily faced with the elements, our day can be planned and then the weather closes in. We are always prepared for this as this is just a fact in this environment.

Who are the other people within SKYCITY that you have to cooperate with in order to do your job?

We deal with all departments, we have a lot to do with Property Services also Marketing, Entertainment, Convention and Security.

How does working with these people enable you to do your job better?

We all work as a team and support each others departments as this is a vital link in achieving day to day tasks and special projects.

Please provide an outline of a 'day in the life' of your job.

  1. Check emails and phone messages
  2. Supervisor and staff briefing
  3. Quality Assurance and walk properties including site inspection of projects
  4. Management meetings
  5. Liaise with Contractors with work in progress
  6. Project management
  7. Supervising hands on with technical rigging operations
  8. Reporting and managing H&S and Training issues
  9. Recruiting
  10. Implementing training systems and training staff on site
  11. Involvement in Industry meetings (Rigging & Rope Access)
  12. Keeping up to date with the latest info regarding OSH and H&S
  13. Reviewing procedures
  14. Many other things fill my day but this gives an overall idea of what I do.

Some days are dedicated to training e.g. rescue from Sky Tower, abseil, use of equipment etc, or if we are involved in a special project then that's all we would focus on over that period.

Key Roles

Rigging on all Auckland SKYCITY properties; the Sky Tower, SKYCITY Auckland Convention Centre, SKYCITY Grand Hotel, SKYCITY Casino, Sky Metro, SKYCITY Hotel and Federal house. I also look after the Grounds section of Property Services.

Job Description

Mainly administration these days, with a strong focus on Health and Safety, project management and training.
