National Poker League Tournament at SKYCITY Adelaide
Four hundred qualifiers from over 120 pubs and clubs throughout South Australia are participating in the National Poker League SKYCITY Adelaide Casino Main Event satellite tournament this weekend.
Held in SKYCITY Adelaide Casino’s Marble Hall, players have qualified for this weekend’s tournament by winning National Poker League poker tournaments in South Australian pubs and clubs over the past four weeks.
There are four sessions (two on Saturday 23 August and two on Sunday 24 August). The winner of each session will qualify for a seat in SKYCITY Adelaide’s upcoming Holdem Championship Series to be held in February 2009. Each of the four prize seats into the SKYCITY Adelaide Holdem Championship series are worth $3000 and give the players a chance to win a share of the largest prize pool in South Australia’s history - a possible $366,000.
Last year, Stephen Grotty, Andrew Grantham, Todd Fullagar and 19 year old Daniel Booth won the four seats entry into the inaugural SKYCITY Adelaide Holdem Championship Series with Daniel Booth taking out the main prize – beating poker legend Joe Hachem and winning the largest cash poker tournament prize in South Australia’s history (over $96,000).
Luck wasn’t on Daniel Booth’s side this year and he didn’t qualify for the National Poker League SKYCITY Adelaide Casino Main Event tournament this weekend.
National Poker League launched in South Australia in June 2007 with 11 venues and just four staff. In just over a year it has grown substantially with over 130 venues participating hosting weekly poker tournaments and National Poker League employs 60 staff.
Around 6000 people play the in National Poker League’s regular free poker tournaments each week in South Australia.
SKYCITY Adelaide Communications Manager, Vanessa Regan, says the popularity of poker continues to gain momentum world over and tournaments like this give everyday people the chance to enter and win an event that is generally off limits to amateur players.
National Poker League features a $25,000 cash final tournament every 10 weeks and will also be putting one lucky South Australian player into the Aussie Millions Main Event next year with a prize package worth over $12,000.
